Wild Trout and Grayling Fly Fishing on the Welsh Marches
Welcome to the Upper Tanat Fishing Club website. Established in 1904, we are a small but enthusiastic club of approximately 45 full paying members. As club we enjoy privileged access to upland spate rivers and still-water fly-fishing for wild brown trout and grayling on the Welsh Marches.
Fishing exclusively fly only, our club waters straddle the border between Powys and the western edge of North Shropshire. Set within the outstanding natural beauty of the rivers Tanat and Vyrnwy these valleys form the foothills of the scenic Welsh Berwyn Mountains. Members enjoy 15 named beats on the river Tanat and a further 3 beats on the river Vyrnwy. We hold fishing rights to a small upland lake of approximately 8 acres nestling within the Berwyn Mountain range. We currently have season ticket access to Caersw’s Angling Association water on the River Severn between Llandinam and Caersws and a stocked trout reservoir west of Oswestry. This provides for an enviable 365 days of combined river and still-water fishing per year, and therefore no rest for the enthusiastic angler.
Both the rivers Tanat and Vyrnwy sustain naturally flourishing populations of brown trout and grayling. The club’s broad strategy for management of the fishery is to conserve the native populations of these game fish. By promoting catch and release and undertaking work to improve fish habitat we aim to encourage healthy natural breeding populations of both species. These measures have resulted in a more interesting, sustainable and diverse fly-fishing experience.
Day permits for the Upper Tanat Fishing Club waters are not available. However, members are issued with six guest tickets per annum for the use of their guests who must be accompanied by the club member when fishing.
